Former President of Brazil Lula was again sentenced to prison

In Brazil, former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sentenced to 12 years and 11 months in prison.

A Brazilian court sentenced Lula to 12 years and 11 months in prison for corrupt corruption and money laundering.

The former head of state's lawyers said they would appeal the decision.

The 73-year-old Lula, who denied all charges against him, argued that the charges were to prevent him from running for president.

Lula, who served as head of state in Brazil in 2003-2010, had not been allowed to leave prison to attend his brother's funeral last week. In Brazil, far right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro said Lula "was hoping for his imprisonment in jail".
